About Rick Deckard

Rick Deckard, famously portrayed by Harrison Ford, is the main protagonist in the action sci-fi novel adapted film Blade Runner in 1982, which is about the futuristic world where the line between men and robot is faded to the point where the definition of humanity has to be redefined. In the film adaptation, he is with the Replicant Detection Division (i.e. Blade Runner unit) of the Los Angeles Police Department. His duty is to kill the replicants (androids), or in their word “retiring” them.

In both novel and film versions, he begins the story as a selfish and self-centered policeman who seemingly sees no value in android life. But as the story progresses, Rick’s revealed to have more sympathy towards the androids because he realizes that the androids in fact share the human’s quality such as feeling and emotions. It also seemed to him that the androids hold more morality than human themselves at the time, who drown deep in decadent.
