La Arana is the dangerous spider on its web pictured in the number thirty-three (33) card in the traditional bingo-like Mexican board game Loteria. The popular game has a deck of 54 picture cards, which is used to draw a picture card that will be the basis to find a corresponding matching picture in the randomly created 4 x 4 grid of pictures known as the tabla. The first to complete a previously agreed pattern on the tabla will shout “Loteria” and will be declared winner of the particular round of the game.
La Arana is a fearsome card. She wears a long spider-witch dress, black pump shoes, a spider masquerade ball mask, and a giant Loteria card with a spider web drawing.
About La Arana
The La Arana card is traditionally associated with the cautionary verse, “Beat it silly with a stick, do not let it near me.” Thus, in fortune-telling, drawing the card may urge one to take precautions against an enemy who intends to do harm or a situation that could be bad. It wants immediate action.
