While the critical review of the movie was not satisfactory, it has since been regarded as a cult classic.

Harlem Nights was nominated for Best Costume Design at the Academy Awards. The characters wear a long-sleeved white button-down shirt, a 3-piece gray pinstripe suit, black and white oxford shoes, a wine red necktie and pocket square, and a fedora gangster hat for the men; and a 1920s vintage black cocktail party dress, T-strap black dance shoes, a vintage headband, black lace gloves, a flapper necklace, earrings, and a white feather boa for women.
